Sydney Affordable Housing Challenge, 2018
‘Radical Terraces: Reinventing the Australian Dream’ offers a solution to Sydney's affordable housing crisis in the form of terraces which is to in-fill and invigorate existing neighbourhoods. Terraces are a long-serving typology of medium-density housing in Sydney.
The terraces are lined along existing streets creating a new public sphere and community centre. Their affordability is based on two tenets. Firstly, they are small in footprint, include minimal finishes, use cheap materials and include passive heating and cooling techniques such as effective orientation and cross-ventilation. Secondly, the terraces include a ‘blank space’ on the ground level which can be rented out as a cafe, office or shop. This becomes a source of sustainable income for the residents and therefore ensures the terraces are continually affordable.
